With a drum roll and a flourish ... ba doomp ba, Ta Daaaaa! ... Adoption.com's News Blog is launched.

Welcome one and all to what is destined to be the web's premium one-stop delivery spot for all the news that is the news in the adoption world.

I'm starting it off, and others will be joining in, determined to graze every corner and crevice ... in addition to the miles of column inches that present daily ... in a continuing quest to provide information on and directions to every adoption-related story, film, book, review, critique, tale, song and dance (the Adoption Reel ... not a square dance, but a cooperative triangle?) that pops into the public forum of press.

Like all news organizations, we welcome tips. If you have an organization that works in an adoption-related field, let me know. If there's an event coming up in your area, let me know. If adoption-related news breaks and you're in on it, let me know.

(For the moment, you can let me know via my International Adoption email address: intladoptionblog@adoptionmail.com)

And now that we've been properly introduced in this context, on to the news ...

Although this might look like a blatant shot of self-promotion ... and believe me, it isn't, as I really don't need any extra attention right now ... there's been a great deal of action on the International Adoption Blog this week, especially this post, that qualifies as news.

Although many of the 82-and-counting comments are tedious and obtuse, the discussion is often enlightening, and it's worth a look, even if only to learn how divided the adoption community can be.

Those new to the adoption world often enter with no idea that anti-adoption sentiment exists, and it can take a while ... and some bruising ... to get just how vehemently antagonistic opposition to the option of adoption can be. Reading the post and the following comments will give a good idea of how the fray can fry.

Congratulations on launching the new blog!!

"Those new to the adoption world often enter with no idea that anti-adoption sentiment exists, and it can take a while ... and some bruising ... to get just how vehemently antagonistic opposition to the option of adoption can be."

When we decided to adopt, just about everyone in my life was positive about adoption, and even those who were lukewarm were simply concerned about my husband and me. So, when I first encountered the anti-adoption sentiment on-line, I was floored. I could not believe that there were people who assumed I was a horrible person just because I had adopted a child. Reading through those comments will be enlightening to anyone who is new to adoption.

I finally plowed my way through them - I had no idea it was such a hot topic! And still, all the opponents of adoption refuse to answer the simple question: "What happens to the children"? I'm posting a blog today quoting an organization in Uganda that is reporting a child sexual abuse rate of over 90%. Holy snikeys - that's preferable to adoption?! Sandra, keep it up.

I echo the sentiment. While I knew the issues and concerns in adoption, via various books and internet sites, I was completely taken back by the intensity of the anti-adoption sentiments. Yikes!

I am finally learning to step back a little and realize that just because some people oppose adoption it does not invalidate my or my son's experience or life.

Unfortunately, there are extremists in every sector of life.

I have to confess, Sandra, that I didn't plow through the 82 comments. I didn't even write my own blog yesterday, as I have been sick and puny. But I feel compelled to point out that some have wondered if *I* am anti-adoption, what with the challenges my adoptees have presented me. I am always very quick and very firm to point out that I think adoption is a good solution to a series of bad situations. Adoption is a far better option than not in many cases ... my platform is that parents need to be prepared and supported and provided resources for dealing with the fallout of kids who have been abused, neglected or abandoned.

I just felt the need to clarify that.

Good luck on your new blog!

If only people would truly focus on the children and not themselves, this debated would be long over.
Sandra, congrats on the new blog. You will do a wonderful job!

The first night I plowed through all 62, while downing a bag of bagel chips, last night I read the last 20 while eating cookies and milk. I enoyed most of the comments, I was shocked at others, and yet there were some that had me reeling with laughter at how absurd they really were. I too found it interesting how there was no answer to the questions about the children, it seems as though it was simply ignored.

Maybe we only get the answer if we switch sides of the fence? Perhaps it is a closely guarded secret..

Julie,
If you keep mentioning those bagel chips, you're going to have to send me some. I've never heard of such a wonder and they sound like a little bit of heaven!

Everyone else ... thanks so much. You know I'm going to be trying my best.

Hi Sandra,

I thought I had posted this, but either I posted it somewhere else (entirely possible), or there is a conspiracy to keep me off the blog sights (wink, wink).

Anyway, I tried to reply to you via email to no avail. That DAEMON guy just kept kicking me back to my corner.

No, Chromesthesia, you kept trying to have an intelligent conversation in the midst of absurdity.
