I came across a few interesting articles regarding two of the candidates for the Presidential Republican nomination that might be of interest to some of you in the adoption community.
The first
article is about Rudolph Giuliani, former mayor of New York City and one of the front runners for the Republican Presidential nomination. He has previously been tagged as a pro-abortion candidate but is trying to align himself with Republican pro-lifers. Recently while campaigning in Iowa, he said, “I will increase adoptions, decrease abortions, and protect the quality of life for our children.” He wants to emphasize that he cares about the children and can point to the increasing number of adoptions in New York City as proof of this.
On August 6th at a campaign stop in Fort Dodge, Iowa, he focused on adoption policy. According to a press release from his campaign, if he were President, Giuliani would promote an “innovative national effort to communicate the rewards of adoption to potential parents.” He would implement policies designed to “speed up and simplify” adoption procedures, allow states to receive child welfare grants, and direct the Office of Faith Based and Community Initiatives to “promote organizations uniquely prepared to provide the necessary assistance to women who choose adoption” as well as make the $10,000 adoption tax credit, set eventually to expire, permanent.
Moving right along to the second
article which is about one of the other politicians running for the Republican nomination is Mitt Romney. Romney has been under heavy criticism for flip-flopping on the abortion issue. He has previously campaigned as a pro-abortion candidate but he too is trying to align himself with the Republican pro-lifers.
In an interview on Sunday, Mitt Romney’s wife, Ann, was questioned about a donation of $150 that they made to Planned Parenthood. She told Fox News that now she and her husband are both pro-life and are actively promoting the pro-life perspective.
Now, Romney is touting about their recent $15,000 donation to Massachusetts Citizens for Life.
