Many of those interested in news on adoption from Russia keep ahead of the curve by reading
Virginia's blog and probably don't need me to tell them that three-quarters of a million Russian kids are orphaned or abandoned, but there are a few reports today that have me writing on the topic today, nonetheless.
This story from "Russia Today" looks at adoption on the Russian domestic front and tries to convince people in the country to "'get rid of certain myths and prejudices surrounding children who have lost their parents either through bereavement or abandonment", as apparently:
... there's a view in Russia that "children who are deprived of parental care will become alcoholics if their parents were addicted to alcohol, or that a promiscuous mother will always have a promiscuous child".
With poverty and deprivation no strangers to many in Russia and the resulting alcoholism rife, not only is the option of domestic adoption far less likely than many would hope, abuse of children is far too likely.
And with child pornography making headlines at the moment regarding
the recent bust of a huge kiddy porn ring that did horrible things to Ukrainian kids, one Russian news organization is determined to
locate and publicly expose a mother who provided her four daughters, aged between one and twelve, for purposes of being used and abuse for porn.
The Zoe's Ark mess gets messier as
four Chadians are arrested for their part in whatever the heck was going on with a bunch of French people and 103 little kids.
There will be a lot more coming out of this story eventually ... if it's done right.
There's more Duh!-inducing gobbledygook coming out the UN today.
Seems their concisely titled "UN Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance" ... whew ... has figured out that "increased violent racism threatens human rights".
Hold the phone! Let me write that down! Oh ... I just did.
The UNanswer to this recently revealed major issue?
While noting that nations should use both legal and social methods to combat racism, Diene specifically encouraged the adoption of legal, political and administrative methods to ensure universal human rights, particularly the freedoms of religion and expression.
Golly, gee! No wonder this person gets the big bucks!
But seriously, folks ... will anyone in a brand new white SUV and an expensive suit, fresh from stepping off a private jet that served a lovely lunch be coming up with an idea or two on just how this might be accomplished?
Read the piece if you're in the mood for UNonsence.
