I came across an
article recently about a man who found his birth parents via MySpace. It’s kind of interesting that MySpace has become more than just a social networking website. It’s such a large and widely used website that it makes sense that you could potentially locate birthparents or adoptees. This is not the first MySpace reunion that I have heard about, just the first article about one.
In the article we are introduced to Leon Bailey, an adoptee who born in 1982 in England to an unwed teen. She struggled to make it and eventually Leon was placed for adoption with an American military family stationed at a British airbase. His adoption papers did reveal his birthmother’s name but he had never been able to find her.
Until one night, when he decided to casually typed his birthmother’s name, Deborah Kneuman, into the search option on MySpace and moments later he was looking at the MySpace page of a 41 year old British woman.
"One night I was just relaxing at home watching a movie and I thought to myself, why don't I look on MySpace, just maybe she might be on there," Leon explained. "So I typed in her name and hers was the first picture that popped up."
He contacted her via MySpace and they began emailing. She was indeed his birth mother.
Inspired by the way Leon found her, Deborah decided that she would search MySpace for Leon’s birth father. She typed in his name, Tony Goulborne, and moments later she was looking at his MySpace page. As she looked at Tony’s MySpace page she saw that he had photos of Leon as a toddler.
Tony was excited when he heard from Leon.
"It was like it was the missing jigsaw to my whole life,” Tony said.
Leon is looking forward to meeting his birthparents in person, which thanks to MySpace, will probably take place in September.
