Madonna, Stocklaufers, Ontario opens records, trauma and more

In a very sensible move, Madonna's publicist, Liz Rosenberg, has publicly stepped forward and announced that there is no new news on the adoption of Malawian-born David, the toddler Madonna and husband brought home a year ago next month.

Seems a silly thing to make a 'to do' over non-happenings, but so goes the world of celebrity anythings.

Ms. Rosenberg has informed the media that there has been no interference, no "use of Madonna's celebrity to speed up the adoption", and that everything is going according to the schedule ... the same schedule outlined at the beginning of the process.

In other words, there is no news.

This non-news, of course, is plastered as headlines all over the world.

Sigh ...

I wish the story of the Stocklaufers was getting as much international press.

At a press conference following surgery to help Gary Stocklaufer lose weight as an effort to regain custody and be allowed to adopt the son who has been with him from the age of one week. Gary voiced disappointment over the judges refusal to rehear the case, and added:

"If they are so in tune on the child's best interest, the last time I looked from way back when, family took care of family," Gary said during a press conference. "And that's what I'm trying to do. I'm taking care of my cousin who's going to be my son."

This situation is shameful, and should warrant an uproar heard from Missouri to Washington DC ... and beyond.

September 17th is the date the Adoption Information Disclosure Act 2005 begins to be fully implemented in Ontario. As of that date, adult adoptees and birth parents will be able to apply for original birth records and information contained in adoption orders.

"The new legislation will give adult adoptees and birth parents the ability to find the information they have been looking for," said Karen Lynn, president of the Canadian Council of Natural Mothers and a member of the COAR coordinating committee. "It treats adult adoptees and birth parents with the respect they deserve."

Parents concerned about their kids' cellphone use may soon have the ability to control texting and other functions.

According to this report, AT&T is about to launch a new service for parents that will, " dictate when kids receive calls, curb how many text messages they can send, block downloading functions or impose other restrictions."

And for an interesting bit of science, there's an interesting new study out that suggests children born to parents with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have lower average levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

The research was conducted on adult children of Holocaust survivors, so they're not talking subtle trauma, and the implications are interesting.

Being that most of our children's biological parents endured stress and trauma on some level ... many close to that of those in concentration camps ... the impact on our kids could be significant.

That's interesting about the PTSD. I am curious about whether it made a difference if the parents had actively healed from the PTSD while raising their children or if they were in the throes of battling it.

As someone who has healed from PTSD, I do not believe there is a genetic component. I believe that anyone who suffers ongoing and severe trauma develops PTSD in reaction to the trauma, and the dissociation used is a coping strategy to help the person survive. So, I do not believe there would be a gene to pass along.

However, these results could be explained by the trauma continuing to the next generation. If the parent has not healed from the disorder and is actively having flashbacks around the child, this could cause trauma to the child, accounting for the cortisol differences.

Interesting topic!

I got the impression that there was thought that something significant could happen biologically during pregnancy ... chemically, perhaps?

You're right ... it's very interesting, and opens up wider thoughts.
