For Newbies: An explanation of divisions within the adoption community

This is the first installment of a long commentary, complete with flourishes, for people new to adoption. The shorter, no-frills version is here.

From the fringes, the adoption world can give the impression of a rarified, rose-tinted Fantasyland of doe-eyed orphans running into the open arms of doting parents, all stage-managed by kismet and blessed from above. Those who will never enter the world may keep those illusions and feed them on sugarcoated Movies-of-the-Week and cherry-picked news accounts of happily-ever-after.

Anyone with the inclination ... or temerity ... to cross the border between thinking about adoption in general-opinions-formed-on-little-but-mainstream-media-land and gathering real information because lives-hang-in-the-balance-ville should soon discover that the terrain ain't nearly as flat and smooth as it looked from a distance.

Often, people about to embark look for guidance and seek out those with knowledge and experience in hopes of benefiting from both, and so forego the necessity of having to reinvent the wheel -- a sensible approach.

Those of us here at Adoptionblogs.com are, whether we knew it when we started the gig or not, resources people on their adoption journeys turn to. Since we've all come to the table from different directions, each brings something unique to offer.

All of our experiences overlap, but some by only the tiniest of margins, so it's often difficult to see that we are talking about the same thing ... even for us. There are times when it seems that we're not only not on the same page, but in completely different libraries, when in fact we're sometimes just at opposite ends of the same sentence.

As a group, we present a well-rounded map of the adoption world and go far in teaching people new to the arena much about navigating their way. From every angle ... adoptive parents, adoptees, birth parents ... we shine a clear light on the rosy glow and work to illuminate the path equally for everyone.

One lesson we all agree is vital is about the huge mountain that has to be climbed early in the adventure: Adoption is as much about loss as it is about gain. Until that one is under your belt, the journey hasn't begun. The struggle to get on top of it usually dislodges the rose-tinted shades and adjusts the expectations ... the first steps.

Other important items to absorb can be equally hard to swallow, and require a good dose of 'this is real AND important' to facilitate incorporation into the developing Big Picture. We supply that here, too.
