While half paying attention to television Friday night, I heard this unique adoption/reunion story and was intrigued by the details I did hear, so I got online to search for more. I must preface this story by saying it is one of those stories that is so rare and unique.
Brandy Hersh, now 27 and Heidi Wickware, now 25 met about five years ago and instantly felt a connection towards one another and became best friends. Brandy reminisces about how their friendship started:
“When we first met, it was an automatic connection. I had told her that we were — that I thought of her as such a good friend, like a better friend than some of the friends that I’d had for years and years and years. And we just clicked. We liked the same things. We liked to do the same things. I mean, now that I look at it, it was like we’d almost finish each other’s words at that time.”
After the two girls had been friends for awhile, Brandy met Heidi’s mother, Lisa. Somehow in conversation, it came up that Lisa had given up a baby for adoption. Two years after Lisa gave that first baby girl up for adoption because she was a single mother, she became pregnant again with Heidi, but this time she married Heidi’s father.
After chatting a bit more, the few details that Brandy and her family did know about her birthmother seemed to fit. Brandy then tried to have her adoption records open so that they could find out if Lisa was indeed her birth mother, but they quickly became impatient dealing with all the red tape one must deal with when trying to have their records opened.
After eighteen months, Brandy and Heidi finally decided to have a DNA test. It came back that they were definitely sisters. Brandy said that finding out they are indeed sisters, doesn’t change anything, that it in fact just makes them closer.
