Asperger's tied to eating disorders, expats adopting, & condoms

Before I get to any other news, I'd like to ask that you take a minute to read Deb's blog from yesterday on the ribbon campaign starting up in support of the Socklaufer family.

Gary and Cynthia Stocklaufer have been denied the adoption of a relative's child ... a relative who chose them in her adoption plan ... because Gary is fat.

If you're interested in getting involved and wearing a baby blue ribbon to show your disapproval of such blatant prejudice, please do.

In a very interesting report a Professor of Psychiatry at King's College, London asks: Is anorexia the female Asperger's?

Tying eating disorders to a "... distorted pattern of processing information has a strong similarity to autistic spectrums ...", the article makes many observations that those familiar with issues like Apserger's, OCD and other conditions will recognize.

Check out Julie's blog on her daughter's eating issues for another look at the topic.

On the international front, this look at ex-pats living in China and adopting Chinese kids gives an angle we don't often get to see.

Living in your child's birth country for an extended period of time, possibly for life, gives a whole different slant on adopting internationally that I find fascinating.

Is a Chinese child adopted by Americans in China more Chinese than American? More American than Chinese? As much one as the other? Blessed with a family that's blessed with a child no matter what ... or where?

(I vote "D".)

Open adoption has made the news in this story out of Petaluma, California.

It's a nice, gentle look at a a family that appears to be doing a good job, and a good educational tool for readers new to the concept. We need more stories like these in the news around the world.

And just because I can, I'll end this post with condoms.

First, an awareness campaign for condom use in India has won an award from the UN for excellence.

Called, "Condom Bindaas Bol -- (Say Condoms Freely)", its points were to get people used to saying 'condom', then encouraging them to actually use them, even if they aren't in a high-risk group for exposure.

Apparently, celebs got in on the act doing public service announcements and such, podcasts were done, and efforts were made to get the message about in as many forms of media as possible.

Condoms have long been big in Thailand ... I know, I know ... so it's no surprise that there was a big turnout when a request went out for volunteers to test condoms for 'customer satisfaction".

It's reported that more than 1,000 people ... doesn't say anything about gender ... turned up.

"We are surprised to see huge interest in our campaign with almost 1,000 applicants wanting to take part," said an official at a Thai marketing firm for condom-maker Durex.

The campaign was part of Durex's efforts to promote safe sex as well as giving Thais "an outstanding opportunity to enjoy their favorite pastime," Durex said in a statement.
